I was reading up on the Technorati Ranking system this morning when I came across this interesting post and its accompaniment over at docsaab. And it got me thinking, why do we blog?
As of this posting I am ranked 1,919,393, with 1 link from 1 blog. [Update: Now it lists 4(?) links from 2 blogs and I am ranked 1,923,551!!! What the hell!?] This is odd, as I actually have 3 links from 2 blogs, but this is neither here nor there. As I am young (the blog, not me, I understand that it will take me some time to establish a footing.
Sure, I blog for myself mostly, but still, ultimately I want to be known, as I believe the case is for everyone… As part of that, I would like to be recognized on the larger front, read and referred to.
I suppose this isn’t a total counter argument, but it is a bit atypical to what I expected.
I understand blogging for one’s self. An open journal if you will. But I still want/desire/long/what-have-you for the recognition. Is that a bad thing? I’m not sure exactly…
What do you desire? Do you simply desire to blog alone, be alone? Do you desire the companionship of fellow bloggers? Do you want fame, glory? Should I expect to hear your name in casual dinner conversation, or do you want to remain shrouded in obscurity?
Do you think it’s respectable to say, “I do it for myself, I don’t care if you, or anyone, reads/returns/cares… It’s not about you…” You know you die a little inside, knowing that all 50 hits are simply time-lapsed versions of yourself… I do… Maybe you don’t, I can’t know what’s in your head.
I mean, it’s not like the question hasn’t been asked before…
Then, as I was browsing for more examples (as two is pretty skimpy) I found this article that not only asks the question, but actually breaks the reasons down into categories and sub-categories… Intense…
In response to Qwaider’s article, I blog for a bit of 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 17 and 18… Phew… What about you?
I urge you to head over there and check in with your various thoughts… It’s a hot topic, and it’d be interesting to see what everyone’s reasons are…
